Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Beshear will miss Game 1 of the World Series.
As the Fall Classic is set to begin on Friday, the Dodgers announced on Thursday that the 29-year-old Beshear is “separating from the team.”
“We regret that Alex Beshear is stepping away from the team as he and his wife, Kayla, deal with very personal family matters,” the Dodgers shared in a statement. “The entire Dodgers organization has expressed our support to the Beshear family and will provide an update later.”
The specifics of the personal matters remain unclear, including how long Beshear will be absent.
Beshear was originally drafted by the Marlins in 2018 and has been with the Dodgers since they picked him up before the 2021 season after Miami let him go.
In his time with the Dodgers, Beshear has played in 295 games, maintaining a 2.67 ERA and achieving 364 strikeouts. This season, he’s been a reliable relief pitcher, logging 59 1/3 innings, securing five saves, and boasting a 3.02 ERA.
He has already participated in seven postseason games, emerging victorious against both the Phillies and Brewers.
Meanwhile, there’s uncertainty regarding another key player, Dodgers closer Tanner Scott. He was removed from the roster due to an abscess surgery during the NLDS against the Phillies but feels ready to return to the mound.
“I feel much better now. There were definitely some tough days,” Scott told reporters. “I’ve thrown a few times in the bullpen. So we’ll see how it goes. I feel healthy.”
“Honestly, I’m feeling better than I did after the Phillies series; I wasn’t at my best then.”
