Messi Extends Contract with Inter Miami Until 2028
Soccer legend Lionel Messi has inked a multi-year deal, ensuring he will stay at Inter Miami through the 2028 MLS season. This development likely indicates that the Argentine star will conclude his career with the South Florida team.
There were talks in September about extending Messi’s contract, hinting at his continued presence in Miami.
In a video shared by the club, a 38-year-old Messi is seen signing the new contract at Miami Freedom Park, which will be his future home.
A preview of an interview set to air soon features Messi stating that re-signing with Inter Miami was “not a difficult decision.” He mentioned, “I have always said that I make decisions based on how I feel daily, both physically and mentally.”
He continued, “To be honest, I’ve felt great this past year. I’m happy with my life in Miami, and my family feels the same way. So, really, the decision was pretty easy.”
Messi joined MLS in 2023 with a contract that made headlines for being one of the largest in league history, sparking greater interest in American soccer.
In his debut year, Miami captured their first trophy, winning the 2023 League Cup, and Messi led the team to its best regular season, also helping win the MLS Supporters’ Shield.
Overall, Messi has played in 82 MLS matches, netting 71 goals and assisting on 37 others.
David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, expressed, “Our vision is to bring the best players to Miami, and that’s what we’ve accomplished.” He emphasized Messi’s commitment to both the city and the club, stating, “He’s as dedicated as ever and still wants to win.”
Since Messi’s arrival, games have been sold out not just at Inter Miami’s home venue in Fort Lauderdale, but also at arenas across the league when the team is on the road.
Looking ahead, Inter Miami aims to claim another trophy in 2025, kicking off the MLS Cup Playoffs against Nashville SC.
