Dakota Johnson Reflects on Growing Up with Famous Parents

Dakota Johnson, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, along with her stepfather Antonio Banderas, has had a unique upbringing that has shaped her in various ways. Sometimes positively, sometimes not so much.

In a recent interview with Vogue Germany, Johnson shared her experiences, noting, “I don’t think I ever really understood what Hollywood was, but I grew up on set, surrounded by people making movies.” She mentioned being born in Texas because her father was filming there at the time.

The “Fifty Shades of Grey” star recognized that her family’s career was quite different from those of her peers, whose parents held typical jobs. “As a kid, it was tough. If you’re always on the move, making and keeping friends can be challenging,” she admitted. “But I accepted it. This is what we do. It’s in our blood.”

This family background influenced Johnson’s desire to act from a young age. “I was obsessed with movies,” she confessed. “I was the kid who watched the same films repeatedly, which really shapes your imagination and what you think is possible for yourself—especially movies like Mary Poppins and Home Alone.”

However, her parents had restrictions. They didn’t allow her to pursue acting until she finished high school, except for a small part alongside her mother in the 1999 film “Crazy in Alabama.”

Even in a world filled with creativity, growing up with famous parents had its unsettling moments. “When I was little, I was really scared at times. Just going to the supermarket could be overwhelming, with people trying to approach my mom aggressively,” she reflected. “Accepting it as normal at a young age can lead to a lot of complexes.”

Despite these challenges, she recognizes both the good and the bad that come with being in the spotlight. “Of course, being public means your private life is known in a very invasive and painful way. There are downsides, but, I think, there are positives too,” she said.

Melaine Griffith, known for her role in “Working Girl,” first married Don Johnson in 1976, but their marriage lasted just six months. They reconciled and married again in 1989, shortly before Dakota was born, but divorced in 1996. Griffith then married Banderas in 1996, a marriage that ended in 2015.

As for Dakota, she remains single after a long-term relationship with Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, which ended this year.
