Karine Jean-Pierre faces backlash for her views on Biden and the Democratic Party

Karine Jean-Pierre’s New Book Sparks Controversy

Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s latest book, The Independent, released this week, has drawn criticism from liberal interviewers as she defends former President Joe Biden and shares her reasons for leaving the Democratic Party.

During her interviews, her assertion that the party let Biden down by pushing him out of the 2024 race faced tough questioning from CBS hosts Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King. Dokoupil remarked, “Some Americans will say, ‘Seriously?'” Jean-Pierre maintained that she had not encountered anything that made her doubt Biden’s mental acuity, despite various reports suggesting otherwise.

King further probed into Biden’s mental state, linking Jean-Pierre’s departure from the party to her dissatisfaction with its current dynamics, especially in the context of the Trump administration. “I want to understand what Tony said, because that’s what I thought too,” King expressed. “You noted that you were part of the inner circle and didn’t see any decline. Well, how is that possible? You even wrote about being on a plane with him before a debate.”

Discussions on Biden’s Health

Jean-Pierre’s book criticizes the Democrats’ treatment of Biden, asserting they betrayed him by forcing him to exit the race. She officially left the party this year, citing that she “couldn’t stand” being a Democrat anymore. She described a trip where she didn’t meet Biden because family was present, despite being on the same plane to Atlanta.

She emphasized her serious view on the questions surrounding Biden’s health, noting her role as his press secretary, where she interacted with him nearly every day. Dr. King interjected, asking, “Did you not see anything?”

Kamala Harris and Press Interactions

Jean-Pierre argued that Biden’s team openly acknowledges his age, often joking about it, while affirming that he remains mentally robust. “I’ve observed someone who remains passionate, deeply understands policy, and is aware of history,” she stated. However, liberal host Tim Miller criticized Biden’s communication skills during a podcast, questioning if Jean-Pierre ever addressed his age with him. She confirmed she hadn’t but asserted that Biden could express his thoughts effectively.

Miller countered by pointing out that Biden had communicated less with the press than Donald Trump. Jean-Pierre interrupted, asserting, “That’s not true, Tim.” She claimed Biden spoke with reporters multiple times weekly and suggested that Miller might be misinformed.

Criticism from Various Angles

Becca Rothfield from the Washington Post harshly critiqued Jean-Pierre’s book, labeling it “outdated” and filled with clichés. She noted, “It’s surprising that such a cliché-ridden writer was in such a significant communications role.” Rothfield continued, “Jean-Pierre’s issues appear largely personal—complaints about how Democrats treated Biden and her.” Independent journalist Matt Taibbi called the book “incoherent,” while Jean-Pierre herself referred to it as “insensitive.” She argued that the two-party system is “broken” but still holds loyalty to the Democratic Party.

During her appearance with Stephen Colbert, Jean-Pierre faced similar pushback on her narrative of Democrats betraying Biden. Colbert, a firm Biden supporter, remarked on his concerns about Biden’s health after witnessing a stark difference in him at a charity event just months apart.

Jean-Pierre maintained that she interacted with Biden daily and stressed that he was capable of governing. Yet, Colbert countered, “I don’t think it’s a betrayal of Biden as some say. I think we saw a very different man.”

Reactions and Final Thoughts

While Jean-Pierre received praise in some interviews, such as from former MSNBC host Joy Reid, where she was complimented on her appearance, many co-hosts on “The View” echoed her criticisms of how Democrats treated Biden. Interestingly, in her book, Jean-Pierre admitted she never believed Kamala Harris would secure a win.
