Arturo Gatti Jr.'s sister alleges he was 'mysteriously killed'

Investigation into Death of Boxer Arturo Gatti Jr.

The sister of 17-year-old boxer Arturo Gatti Jr. believes his death was “mysterious,” and authorities are now treating it as a homicide.

Sofia Gatti, daughter of Canadian boxing icon Arturo Gatti Sr., stated that after her brother was discovered hanging in his apartment in Mexico City earlier this month, the family received documentation indicating that investigators are considering his death a homicide.

The grieving family has raised over $25,000 to “hire an investigative team to conduct an autopsy, perform toxicology tests, and gather reports… to uncover the truth of what really happened.”

Sofia expressed gratitude toward those supporting their efforts to reveal the circumstances surrounding her brother’s death. “I appreciate everyone who has stood with us as we seek the truth about Arturo Gatti Jr.,” she mentioned.

The family has undertaken various legal and investigative actions across Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. They have sought the preservation of Arturo’s remains, gained access for the investigation, and initiated a forensic inquiry.

According to Sofia, the donations have gone toward legal services, document requests, and travel expenses for formal applications, along with initial funding for an experienced independent investigative team in the U.S. focused on international criminal cases.

The next phase is expected to require around $16,000, which will cover significant legal and forensic efforts, including extended toxicology testing, fingerprint analysis, and expert reviews to keep the case progressing in court.

“Each contribution helps ensure transparency and accountability, allowing the family to pursue the truth, integrity, and justice for Arturo,” Sofia wrote.

“Our long-term goal is to synchronize all legal efforts across the involved countries to create a clear and coordinated route toward justice.”

Arturo Gatti Jr. had aspirations of following in his Hall of Fame father’s footsteps. He relocated to Mexico City to train at a local boxing academy in preparation for his professional debut. Tragically, he was found dead in the apartment he shared with his mother, Amanda Rodriguez.

A report mentioned that there was uncertainty about whether foul play was involved shortly after his passing.

Arturo Gatti Sr., a two-division world champion and holder of both IBF and WBC titles, was found hanged in Brazil in July 2009 at the age of 37 by his wife, Amanda Rodriguez Gatti.

Following Arturo Sr.’s death, his wife was taken into custody but was released later, as authorities concluded that he had died by suicide.

Arturo Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013.
