Ethiopian refugee mistakenly released following sexual assault conviction in the UK

Britain’s immigration system is facing significant criticism following the confirmation that an Ethiopian asylum seeker sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, while another woman was mistakenly released from prison. This has led to a manhunt for the escaped sex offender.

Hadush Gerberslassie Kebatou, 38, was sentenced to a year in prison last September, as reported by Reuters. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his outrage, labeling Kebatu’s release as “totally unacceptable.” This incident has triggered ongoing protests outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, a migrant accommodation about 20 miles north of London.

According to the Home Secretary, over 400 hotels were at one point used to house asylum seekers, costing the government nearly £9 million daily, which is roughly $11.3 million.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to close such hotels soon to prevent further confusion, referring to the Bell Hotel incident as part of a larger issue regarding the management of asylum seekers in the country.

Reports indicate that Kebatu was intended to be sent to an immigration detention center but was released by mistake. British Attorney General David Lammy expressed shock over this error and announced that an investigation is underway. Lammy asserted that Kebatu should be deported instead of being allowed on the streets.

Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative MP for North West Essex, criticized the government for systemic failures, stating that a “fake asylum seeker” had been wrongfully released. She conveyed concerns about the threats to women and girls in the community, stressing that the system is collapsing under the current government’s watch.

Badenoch highlighted that the Conservative Party had opposed Labour’s plan to release prisoners, arguing it would put dangerous individuals back on the streets. She described the situation as “incredible incompetence” while reiterating that her party is the only one with a solid plan to enhance border security.

Nigel Farage, an MP with the British Reform Party, also condemned the situation, claiming that Kebatu’s wrongful release illustrates a broader deterioration in the country’s governance.
