Sylvester Stallone shares how Hollywood left him behind for almost ten years

Sylvester Stallone Reflects on Hollywood Struggles in Recent Interview

Sylvester Stallone has opened up about the challenges he’s faced throughout his lengthy career. In a recent chat, the 79-year-old actor revealed feelings of being sidelined by Hollywood, stating, “I couldn’t find work for almost 10 years.”

After the release of *Copland*, Stallone felt abandoned. “No one needed me, not even my agent,” he shared. “I got dropped from CAA. My personal manager at that time said, ‘I can’t do anything for you. Nobody needs you anymore.’ I was shocked. How did this happen? Studios somehow make you feel as if you aren’t yourself.”

Stallone recalled approaching a former agent, who was managing Universal Studios, asking for any opportunity. Her response was, “I’ll try to help, but it’s not up to me.”

Despite being told that his time in the spotlight was over, Stallone persevered. He reminisced about wanting to return to *Rocky*, which he described as his “safe space.” Yet he faced resistance; the original producers were reluctant to pursue another installment following the disappointing *Rocky V*. “They basically said, ‘We don’t care about our bodies.’ My wife even voiced doubts, saying, ‘I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.’”

A twist of fate during a vacation in Mexico, where he met a film producer, eventually led to a fifth installment in the *Rocky* series, marking his return to prominence. Stallone also wrote and starred in several *Rambo* films and the *Expendables* series, along with reprising his role in the *Creed* movies.

The first *Rocky* film not only jumpstarted his career but also garnered Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. Reflecting on *Rambo*, Stallone feels a connection to the character, considering his own tough upbringing.

“In many ways, Rambo embodies a lost child. He’s a young man who feels rejected after doing everything asked of him,” he explained. “His story is about violence, but it goes deeper.” Stallone touched on his own tumultuous childhood, revealing in the 2023 Netflix documentary *Sly* that he was “raised by a very physical father” accustomed to serious pain. This life experience instilled in him a mindset of resilience: “I won’t give up.”

Discussing his upbringing in an interview, Stallone described his mother as someone who didn’t express love, labeling her as a “borderline personality disordered narcissist.” He remembered, “My mother didn’t need me. She never hugged me. My father wasn’t prepared to be a parent.”

In another interview, Stallone reflected on the harsh realities of his past. He stated, “People would have been arrested now, but I understand what it means to be rejected. That knowledge is part of my success. My father couldn’t break me, so no one else would.”

Stallone described himself as “disruptive,” yet he found his calling in the arts and began acting, albeit accidentally. Struggling to gain traction with casting directors, he concluded that “acting guarantees 97 percent unemployment.” Realizing he would be limited to minor roles unless he changed the game, he decided to delve into writing.

“It was tough. I still struggle with things like pronouns and verbs,” he humorously admitted. “When writing, the way you speak reflects who you are. I realized I didn’t want to play the stereotypical thug. Instead, I wanted to delve into a character with depth.”

Regarding the enduring appeal of the *Rocky* films, Stallone believes they resonate universally. “Everyone faces challenges and desires to achieve something in life. We all want to be proud and support our families, facing fears about how we’re perceived,” he said.

Currently, Stallone stars in the Paramount+ series *Tulsa King* and appears in the reality show *The Family Stallone* alongside his wife Jennifer Flavin and their three daughters.
