President Trump expressed disappointment on Saturday regarding the lack of progress toward peace between Russia and Ukraine after more than three years of conflict.
Since starting his second term, Trump has made ambitious claims about resolving the war quickly and has sought a peaceful resolution. He had intended to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon but ultimately decided to cancel the meeting, stating he didn’t want to “waste time.”
“I’m not going to waste any time. I’ve always had a great relationship with President Vladimir Putin, and this is very disappointing. I assumed peace in the Middle East would be established before this,” Trump remarked to reporters while traveling on Air Force One to Malaysia.
He mentioned the conflicts involving Azerbaijan and Armenia, noting the challenges. “President Putin even said, ‘Hey, that was amazing,’ because others failed to address it but I did,” Trump added.
There have been calls from Trump and his supporters for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in managing international disputes. However, the ceasefire orchestrated by the U.S. in Gaza is still in question, largely due to Hamas’s refusal to disarm.
Recent sanctions imposed by Trump on Russian oil companies may have diminished hopes for resolving the situation in Ukraine.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, commented that “The United States is our enemy, and their superficial ‘peacemakers’ are now leading toward war with Russia,” in a recent telegram post.
He went on to assert that regardless of the circumstances, the decision to impose sanctions is a declaration of war against Russia, adding that Trump seems to align himself with an extreme perspective in Europe.
In response to criticisms from the Kremlin regarding the sanctions, Trump highlighted that deep-seated animosity between Russia and Ukraine remains a significant barrier to any peace efforts.
“We thought the agreements we made would be more complicated than this conflict, and yet, that wasn’t the case. There’s a lot of hatred there,” he remarked.
Trump also indicated his intention to encourage Chinese President Xi Jinping to continue reducing purchases of Russian oil as a means to promote peace in Eastern Europe. “As you noted today, China has significantly decreased its Russian oil imports, India has halted purchases, and we’ve placed sanctions,” he concluded.
