U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team Struggles at World Championships
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team had a disappointing performance at the world championships in Jakarta last week, securing only two medals. This marks the country’s lowest medal count at an international event since 2001.
The two medalists were Lian Wong, who earned silver in the individual all-around, and Jocelyn Roberson, who took home bronze on the vault.
China outperformed the U.S. by winning three medals, while neutral athletes from Russia also claimed three. It’s a stark contrast to the U.S.’s usual dominance in international gymnastics.
Chelsea Memmel, the program leader, reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “It was tough. There were some very good pieces, but some rough spots as well. Overall, I didn’t feel like their events or skills were attacked. They have potential, just some work to do.” She added that while they will have discussions about the performance, it won’t be overly harsh, as the gymnasts are aware of their underperformance and are eager to improve.
The U.S. regularly excels in women’s gymnastics but has not led in medal counts since 2006, aside from a tie in 2017 and 2021. This year’s absence of stars like Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles really highlighted the team’s struggles.
As the team pushes toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Memmel emphasized the importance of confidence. “Going into each turn with the intention of being great is crucial,” she mentioned. It’s about believing in oneself and being ready when the moment arises.
