BLM Founder Faces Assault Charges

Hawk Newsom, the founder of Black Lives Matter in New York, appeared in court on Monday, facing charges related to an incident at a political rally in Harlem last week. It was reported that he assaulted a black man while expressing his views on what he described as the “black face of systemic oppression.”

During the protest, Newsom is accused of punching William Allen, the Manhattan Democratic Borough Leader, and hurling a bullhorn as the event descended into chaos, according to sources.

The situation began when Newsom and numerous activists gathered at City Councilman Yousef Salam’s Harlem office to protest the removal of community funding from nonprofit leaders.

Details regarding what led to the altercation remain unclear.

Newsom had encouraged his followers to assemble outside the 28th Precinct to witness his surrender, claiming that the charges against him were politically motivated. He drew parallels to Martin Luther King Jr., suggesting that such experiences are part of the fight for justice.

“Recognize that this is a step in the right direction. We are not only battling racism, but also the oppressive systems affecting our community,” he stated.

He referred to King’s multiple arrests, asserting, “This is a sign that we are in this fight.” It’s expected that he will face second-degree assault charges related to the incident, with Newsom stating, “The charges against me are false.”

He argued, “This man claims I hit him, but there isn’t any video evidence. There are 30 cameras, yet nobody has the footage. His pride is the only thing that was hurt.”

Supporters of Newsom echoed his sentiments, alleging that the claims were exaggerated and politically driven. Tiffany Fulton, the executive director of Silent Voices United, whose funding was recently cut, condemned the situation, saying others incited chaos.

Fulton expressed her dismay at the political manipulation happening in Harlem. “When the system feels threatened, we see the repercussions of telling the truth,” she added.

She highlighted that some people are willing to create disorder and hide behind authority to maintain a false narrative. “The impact of misinformation is real, affecting good people while those in power evade accountability,” she concluded.
