NFL Quarterbacks Celebrate Triumphs After Adversity

This past Sunday, two NFL quarterbacks who faced their own challenges on the field found themselves basking in the limelight. Justin Fields of New York, after a stint on the bench, completed 21 out of 32 passes for 244 yards and one touchdown, leading the Jets to a late-game comeback. They scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to clinch a 39-38 victory over Cincinnati—their first win of the season. Meanwhile, CJ Stroud of Houston also had a standout game, finishing with 30 completions on 39 attempts for 318 yards and two touchdowns in the Texans’ 26-15 win against San Francisco. After starting the season 0-3, Houston has managed to win three of its last four games.

Fields’ performance was especially impressive considering he hadn’t been expected to start. He was benched during a previous game against Carolina, which ended in a 13-6 loss. Injuries to the Jets’ other quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, propelled Fields back into the starting role. He expressed deep gratitude after the win, telling reporters he was close to tears and thanking “God for his mercy.” This wasn’t the first time he found himself overwhelmed with emotion that week.

“We’re going to be pretty vulnerable here,” Fields said. “But this week I found myself crying on the ground in my closet.”

Interestingly, Fields noted that his tears weren’t just from personal struggles, especially as the Jets had been winless, but stemmed from a sense that God was guiding him.

“I just got an email from my sister and my stepmom, encouraging me to keep going and spread the faith. They sent me something on social media, which I usually don’t check, so it felt like a sign from God to keep moving forward,” he shared. “Yesterday, I prayed repeatedly, ‘Just win one thing.’ All I can say is that God is real. God is good, and everything we experience has a purpose.”

Before the game, Fields conveyed a sense of peace considering the challenges he faced, stating, “My faith is rooted in Christ.”

Both Fields and Stroud are known for their openness about their Christian faith, often discussing it during interviews. Houston’s offense displayed an impressive season-high of 475 yards against the 49ers.

“First of all, I want to give all the glory and praise to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Without him, I am nothing,” Stroud stated in an interview. “I’m a broken, miserable, sinful man, and He has saved me so many times. I trust in God, especially when my confidence wavers.”

Stroud added, “Today, we knew we had a task ahead of us. After last week’s loss, we realized it wasn’t enough. It’s easy to have faith when things are going well, but when you’re tested, it’s a different story. We had tough conversations with the coaches and among ourselves. Now, it feels like we’ve worked through our issues and can move forward.”
