New York Mayor Race Heats Up

Zoran Mamdani, running as the Socialist Party’s candidate for mayor, initially held a significant lead over Andrew Cuomo, according to recent polling. However, the latest figures indicate that Cuomo has made notable strides, reducing the gap considerably.

The mayoral contest is drawing considerable national interest, particularly as various Democratic leaders show a preference for socialist and other far-left candidates. In contrast, Cuomo is aiming to rally support from centrist voters.

Mamdani’s once 20-point advantage from September has now dwindled to just 10 points, based on a Suffolk poll published on Monday. Specifically, 44% of respondents supported Mamdani compared to 34% for Cuomo. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, has also seen a slight bump in his approval rating, climbing from 9% to 11%.

David Paleologos, who directs the Suffolk Center for Political Research, noted that Cuomo has gained traction particularly among Hispanic and independent voters.

In their recent debate, Cuomo continued his criticisms of Mamdani, portraying him as extreme and inexperienced, while Mamdani countered by highlighting Cuomo as a representative of failed establishment policies. During this exchange, Cuomo claimed, “You’ve never worked. You’ve never accomplished anything!” He further insisted that there’s no reason to believe that Mamdani has the qualifications necessary for leading a city with 8.5 million residents.

Amidst this rivalry, many are urging Sliwa to step aside, hoping to consolidate support for Cuomo. The poll suggests this may be a valid strategy, as a significant percentage of Sliwa supporters would prefer Cuomo as their second choice over Mamdani.

If Mamdani emerges victorious, he would make history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, having roots in Kampala, Uganda.
