Arrests Made in Shooting Death of San Francisco Strip Club Manager
Santa Rosa police have arrested two individuals linked to the shooting death of Mark Calcagni, the general manager of the well-known Condor Club in San Francisco, which claims to be America’s first topless bar.
The suspects have been identified as Richard Rand, 43, and Asia Morton, 25, both from Dublin, California. It appears they were in a relationship and worked for an adult entertainment business associated with Calcagni, although details about whether it was the Condor Club or another venue remain unclear.
Authorities allege that Rand shot Calcagni on October 3, waiting for him to arrive home from work. His body was found around 6:30 a.m. in a bike lane on Brookwood Avenue, near Birdfoot Way in Santa Rosa.
Detectives claim Morton played a role in planning the murder. Rand was apprehended Friday at an apartment complex in Dublin, while Morton was taken into custody separately at San Francisco International Airport upon returning from a trip abroad.
After the arrests, police executed a search warrant at the Dublin residence to collect evidence related to the murder.
Initially, the case was difficult due to limited evidence. However, police stated that the investigation team persisted, utilizing witness interviews, surveillance footage, and digital evidence to identify the suspects.
Calcagni was a prominent figure in San Francisco’s nightlife scene. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that he also managed Vanity San Francisco, another adult entertainment venue nearby.
Wolfgang Welch, who recently assumed leadership of Vanity, spoke highly of Calcagni, describing him as a significant personality and a respected member of the local adult entertainment community. “He became one of Broadway’s Mount Rushmores,” Welch remarked.
The Condor Club confirmed Calcagni’s death, expressing deep sadness over the loss. “Mark was more than just our manager. He was a pillar of the Condor Club and an integral part of the North Beach and San Francisco nightlife communities,” they stated. They emphasized that his dedication and leadership shaped the identity of their establishment and mentioned the impact of his passing on the wider community.
Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the murder, and the investigation is ongoing. The Condor Club has not commented on the arrests at this time.
