Recent documents indicate that over 160 Republican members of Congress, including officials from the Trump administration, may have been part of a significant FBI investigation known as Arctic Frost, initiated under President Joe Biden.
Files released by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday identify influential Republican figures like Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, pardon attorney Ed Martin, and trade adviser Peter Navarro, showcasing the expansive nature of the Justice Department’s inquiry into claims of election interference from the 2020 election during Biden’s term.
According to Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, discussions revealed that the scope was “much broader and more far-reaching” than anticipated.
Jordan emphasized the importance of having former special counsel Jack Smith testify before the committee to address allegations of a politically motivated operation targeting Trump. He raised questions on how many other congressional members might have been monitored.
Additional documents indicate that investigations into conservative entities and Trump supporters were initiated by former Attorney General Merrick Garland and others in April 2022, as noted by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley last week.
The investigation was later assigned to Smith in November 2022 after Trump’s announcement to run for president in 2024, during which time Smith accused Trump of improperly retaining national security documents and attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.
A significant part of the 198-page Arctic Frost document has been redacted. It reveals that FBI agents in various field offices conducted interviews and other investigative actions nationwide.
There were also requests to secretly record interviews, with one email documenting an expenditure of $16,600 for travel in June 2022 related to conducting over 40 interviews, serving subpoenas, and issuing several mobile device search warrants.
One particularly striking claim involves Ed Corrigan, director of the Conservative Partnership Institute, branded in an email as “pro-Putin” with intentions to “build infrastructure to train people for civil war.” The email was allegedly sent from a Seattle agent to the FBI’s Washington field office.
Previously released documents show that over 90 conservative organizations, including Turning Point USA led by Charlie Kirk, are part of the ongoing investigation.
Smith has acquired metadata from the cell phones of several Republican senators and a congressman, allowing insight into their communications during the Arctic Frost investigation.
Now, the former special counsel has asked to testify before the House Judiciary Committee to clarify “many misconceptions” surrounding both investigations into Trump.
