Rangers Secure Victory Against Canucks
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — It was a memorable night for the Rangers’ captain as they broke a three-game losing streak, securing a 2-0 win over the Canucks at Rogers Arena on Tuesday. J.T. Miller returned to Vancouver for the first time since being traded on January 31, and the local fans had mixed reactions to his comeback.
This game felt more significant than just a matchup between two mid-tier teams. Though the Rangers have shifted away from their strong defensive start to the season, they’ve maintained a solid structure overall. They managed to restrict Vancouver to only three quality shots during the first two periods, and seven in total, as per Natural Stat Trick.
While the Rangers spent a considerable portion of the third period defending, they held on to their lead. The moment Miller touched the puck for the first time, he was met with a loud chorus of boos, but the noise seemed to diminish as the game went on.
Interestingly, when the Jumbotron displayed a tribute video for him, it prompted everyone in attendance to stand and applaud. Miller, 32, acknowledged the fans with a respectful salute before shifting his focus back to the game.
The Canucks were missing their star defenseman Quinn Hughes for the second game in a row due to a lower-body injury. Miller humorously commented before the game that seeing his former teammates and Canucks’ coach Adam Foote gather was more interesting than yesterday’s events.
The Rangers effectively broke up numerous plays with their sticks and disrupted the Canucks’ odd-man rushes, keeping the home team’s offense in check. Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick was steady, stopping all shots directed at him.
Quick recorded his first shutout of the season and the 64th of his career, stopping a total of 23 shots. Following three straight losses, Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan made significant changes to the lineup, opting for veteran players over rookies. He swapped out Brennan Osman for Johnny Brodzinski and brought in Urho Vaakanainen for Matthew Robertson.
In this recent stretch, the Rangers have been performing well, limiting the Canucks to just four shots on target in the first 20 minutes, leading 1-0 by the end of the first intermission.
Mika Zibanejad showcased his skills by navigating through three Canucks players before passing to Will Quill and driving toward the net. Zibanejad netted his fourth goal of the season from Quill’s feed, giving the Rangers their first lead since their loss to Minnesota last Monday.
Finally, Sam Carrick secured an empty-net goal with 1:33 left in regulation, an event that led to the ejection of a Vancouver fan.
