Karine Jean-Pierre's disappointing book tour is more troubling than you realize

Karine Jean-Pierre is struggling to gain traction with her new book, which seems to be an effort to capitalize on her experiences as White House press secretary, but it hasn’t quite worked out.

Conversely, Rachel Maddow from MSNBC, who is also openly lesbian and involved in advocacy, described Jean-Pierre’s book in a review for The Washington Post as “a fundamentally new and helpful insight into President Biden.” However, another piece highlighted that “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House Outside the Party Lines” was seen as “compelling for all the wrong reasons.”

The reviewer noted that Jean-Pierre’s book felt like it was filled with 180 pages of outdated thoughts reminiscent of slogans seen on lawn signs, leaving them surprised that someone who relied on such clichés was chosen to represent the country at such a high level.

From the book, the Post inferred that Jean-Pierre appeared to be a “blind” supporter of the establishment who had recently distanced herself from the Democratic Party, identifying more as an independent in a manner that seemed more stylistic than strategic. The conclusion was that she didn’t seem to grasp why her former party had seen a significant drop in support.

Journalist Matt Taibbi also reviewed the book for the Free Press, labeling it as “the most disorganized memoir in history.” He pointed out that, after spending over a year contemplating what to say, Jean-Pierre didn’t provide the raw account people hoped for that would include behind-the-scenes realities of her frustrations. Instead, he argued she denied any accountability.

In her book, Jean-Pierre reportedly dismisses the simple explanation for Biden’s challenges, such as his struggles during public appearances. She claims to have watched him closely and noticed no decline, attributing his weak debate performance to factors like a cold and travel fatigue.

Worse still, her attempts to promote the book during her tour have been puzzling. For instance, in recent interviews, she tangled her words when asked by journalists to clarify the supposed betrayal of Biden by Democrats ahead of the upcoming 2024 elections.

When questioned again about why Democrats were supporting Biden, Jean-Pierre’s response turned into a convoluted discourse about personal feelings, her identity as a Black woman in the LGBTQ community, and her views on how the Democratic leadership is handling issues related to vulnerable populations.

The interviewer pushed back, uncertain of how her statements connected to the actual sentiments of many Democrats who think Biden is at risk of losing the election, which polls seem to support.

Later on, when Jean-Pierre started insisting that “nobody knows” what could have occurred otherwise, the interviewer expressed confusion over her point.

Towards the conclusion of this widely discussed interview, Jean-Pierre repeatedly referenced her race and sexual orientation, subtly suggesting that her book’s title hinted at the Trump administration, before accusing the interviewer of advancing Democratic talking points.

Political writer David Weigel remarked on the interview’s awkward performance, suggesting that it’s possible to damage your career even after it seems to end.

Interviews with Jean-Pierre, even with Stephen Colbert — a liberal ally who previously aided Biden’s fundraising efforts — also faltered when Colbert seemed skeptical of her narrative.

Colbert sought clarification on how Democrats had failed Biden. Despite this being a crucial theme in Jean-Pierre’s book, she struggled to provide a clear response, instead discussing Biden’s achievements and his commitment to the American people.

Colbert pointed out that, to be president, it takes more than just that, especially given the alarming performance seen during critical moments on stage. He emphasized that what some may label as a betrayal might just reflect a different perception of Biden than what others witnessed.
