New York City Mayoral Race: Polls Show Tightening Competition

With just days left before voting day, Zoran Mandani has a 10-point lead in the race for New York City’s mayorship, though former Governor Andrew Cuomo is beginning to close the gap. The latest polls, surprisingly, paint a picture of a competitive landscape.

Mandani, a 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and state representative from Queens, made headlines with a decisive victory in the June primaries. Interestingly, the other nine candidates for the Democratic nomination hold a combined 43% of voter support, according to a recent Quinnipiac University survey.

Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amid controversies and is now running as an independent after losing in the primary, has gained 33% support in this new poll.

The survey, conducted from Thursday to Monday after the current mayor, Eric Adams, took office and endorsed Cuomo, shows an evolving race. Adams, initially seeking re-election as an independent, withdrew late last month, yet remains on the ballot.

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels, is trailing with 14%. Quinnipiac also reported that 6% of potential voters remain undecided and 3% chose not to respond.

Cuomo’s campaign spokesperson stated, “The race is heating up and Andrew Cuomo is closing in fast,” suggesting that momentum is shifting in their favor.

However, Mandani’s lead has decreased from a previous 13-point advantage indicated by earlier polls. A Suffolk University poll released on Monday corroborates the findings, also showing a narrow 10-point lead for Mandani.

“This is the second time in a week that despite intense coverage, Zoran Mandani has received less than 45% of the vote while Andrew Cuomo seems to be gaining support,” commented Azzopardi, suggesting Mandani is “stuck in the mud.” Cuomo’s team insists that his support is increasing significantly.

In the final stretch of the race, Cuomo has ramped up his criticism of Mandani, warning of potential “chaos” if Mandani wins. When asked if he feels confident about his lead, Mandani cautioned against complacency, referencing Cuomo’s earlier overconfidence during the primaries.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Sliwa to exit the race, with significant figures trying to ensure a head-to-head battle between Cuomo and Mandani. Among those advocating for Sliwa’s withdrawal is businessman John Catsimatidis, a notable Republican ally of Donald Trump.

If elected, Mandani would not only be the first Muslim mayor of New York City but also the first millennial to hold this position. His campaign has been rooted in addressing affordability issues in a city known for its high living costs, garnering grassroots support from progressive figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders.

Utilizing social media effectively, Mandani has aimed to engage younger voters by proposing measures such as free bus fares, tuition-free education at CUNY, rent freezes, free childcare for young children, and even government-operated grocery stores.

However, Mandani faces criticism for his far-left stance, including his views on Israel and alternative approaches to policing that prioritize social services. As of now, his team has not responded to requests for comment regarding these issues.
