NJ Democratic councilman supports Republican Ciattarelli for governor

A Democratic lawmaker from New Jersey has decided to support Republican Jack Ciattarelli in what is expected to be a tight governor race. Branchville City Councilman Jeff Lewis stated that he believes the Democratic candidate isn’t suited for the position.

“She just hasn’t impressed me,” Lewis mentioned during an interview. He expressed skepticism about her claims to lower electricity costs, attributing her ongoing visibility primarily to her role as a helicopter pilot and mother of four.

This endorsement comes at a time when prominent Democrats such as former President Barack Obama and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro are backing the Democratic candidate.

In this election, Ciattarelli faces Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill. He previously vied for the governorship in 2021 but was defeated by Democratic Governor Phil Murphy, who, having reached his term limit, has endorsed Sherrill for the 2025 race.

Lewis is joining a rising trend of Democrats in New Jersey—many mayors and local leaders—who are crossing party lines to support Ciattarelli. He noted that voters in New Jersey are growing weary of traditional party dynamics.

“People are just a bit fed up with the status quo… tired of the same old methods,” he stated. Lewis even admitted he previously voted for Donald Trump, highlighting his disillusionment with the Democratic Party’s ideals.

“My mom was a Democrat, so when I registered, it just felt right to register that way,” he reflected. “However, that doesn’t mean I’ll always vote that way.” Lewis expressed confidence that many voters share his sentiments in states leaning Democratic.

A recent Fox News poll indicated that 34% of New Jersey voters view high taxes as the primary issue, closely followed by concerns over the rising living costs and housing expenses.

Lewis conveyed that after discussing matters with Ciattarelli, he feels he is the right person to lead New Jersey. “I truly believe he will make the right decisions for our state,” he added.
