Rabbi Alvin Kass Passes Away at 89

Rabbi Alvin Kass, who served as a chaplain for the New York City Police Department for almost six decades, has passed away, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

He was 89 years old.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Kass, stating that he was a source of “strength, guidance and faith for generations of police officers and their families,” particularly during difficult times. The memories he created will be cherished.

Kass, an Air Force veteran, joined the NYPD in 1966, becoming the youngest chaplain in the department’s history at just 30.

“Rabbi Kass dedicated himself to serving the city and the NYPD,” Tisch remarked. “He provided comfort to those in grief, counsel to those in need, and constantly reminded us of the deeper purpose behind our work.”

The rabbi was among the first responders following 9/11, offering support to the families of the 23 officers who lost their lives that day. For over 50 years, he offered solace during both tragedies and triumphs, always ready to lend an ear or a helping hand.

Kass passed early Wednesday, and his funeral is planned for 10 a.m. on Friday at the East Midwood Jewish Center in Brooklyn. He will be laid to rest at the Cedar Park and Beth El Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.

Condolences have been pouring in. Local leaders remember Kass as one of the kindest individuals. Mayor Eric Adams noted that he was a pillar of support for the NYPD, always there in times of need. “Whenever you needed comfort or help, he was right there,” Adams shared.

Former Police Chief Bill Bratton reflected on Kass as a “steady presence” in the city, emphasizing his dedication of nearly 60 years to the NYPD and its families. “His absence will be deeply felt, but his spirit and kindness will endure,” Bratton said.

Brooklyn State Representative Kalman Jaeger also praised Kass, calling him one of the kindest people he ever met and highlighting his unwavering commitment to serving God and the community.
