Colin Farrell Reflects on Difficult Experience Filming Minority Report

Colin Farrell recently shared that Tom Cruise was “not happy” with him during the shooting of the 2002 film, Minority Report.

During a guest appearance on “The Stephen Colbert Show,” the 49-year-old actor reminisced about this project as one of his initial ventures in Hollywood. He admitted to feeling excited to work alongside Cruise, 63, and director Steven Spielberg.

At that time, Farrell was grappling with alcoholism and substance abuse. He recounted that he turned up on set on his birthday, perhaps not in the best condition. “This was the worst day I’ve ever had on a movie set,” he noted. He recalled pleading with the crew about not wanting to work that day, saying, “Who did I think I was?”

“So, my pick-up was at 6 a.m., and I remember the night before, my mind was racing,” Farrell continued. “As soon as I turned off the lights to sleep, my driver called, saying, ‘It’s 6:10.’”

Farrell went on to say that his first assistant director, David H. Vengus Jr., met him on set and immediately expressed concern about how he looked. “I jokingly asked for six bottles of beer and a pack of cigarettes,” which drew laughter from the audience.

“I mean, look, two years later I went to rehab, so not my finest moment, right?” he remarked, generating further laughter.

“But in that moment, it seemed okay,” he added. “People often say that what matters is being present.” He recalled having a few drinks before filming, which was, well, not ideal.

“It was horrible,” he admitted, specifically recalling one line that stuck with him: “‘I think you all understand the basic inconsistency of pre-crime methodology.'” He had difficulty getting this line out and remembered a crew member suggesting he take a break. “But I thought that would just add more pressure when I returned,” he said, opting to keep pushing through.

“We ended up doing 46 takes,” Farrell revealed. “Tom wasn’t exactly thrilled with me. My dear Tom wasn’t very happy either!”

Minority Report is adapted from a short story by Philip K. Dick, set in a futuristic Washington, D.C. in 2054. The plot centers on Chief John Anderton, played by Cruise, who works in a police department that uses prophetic visions from three psychics to prevent crimes before they occur.

Farrell portrayed Danny Witwer, a skeptical official investigating a controversial pre-criminal program. When the system suggests Anderton will commit murder, he goes on the run to prove his innocence, teaming up with Agatha, played by Samantha Morton, to uncover the truth behind the program.

The film was both a critical and commercial triumph, earning $358 million worldwide.
