Nanny Dispute Turns Nightmarish for Wealthy Couple

A couple who believed they had found the perfect nanny for their newborn daughter discovered their hopes dashed when the caregiver allegedly refused to vacate their upscale home in upstate New York.

Barbara Molnar seemed to fit the family’s needs perfectly when Jamie Carano Nordenstrom and her husband, Philip Nordenstrom, answered a summer ad on Nanny Lane in 2024. Jamie expressed her deep affection for her children, saying she was “absolutely, absolutely in love” with them. Molnar was hired for part-time work, 18 hours a week at a rate of $25 an hour.

With her experience as both a parent and nanny, she appeared to be a valuable addition to the new parents. In their $1 million Colonial-era farmhouse in Hillsdale—restored by a consultant—she baked teething biscuits and read German books to the baby, hoping to at least give her a bilingual upbringing.

The Nordenstroms indicated in their ad that a “guest house provided” was part of the arrangement, yet they envisioned having a full-time caregiver for their daughter. When Molnar requested to move in in December, they allowed her to stay rent-free as they attempted to circumvent giving her tenant rights.

However, things quickly deteriorated. Molnar began to ignore many of the family’s household rules. Jamie pointed out that although the guesthouse wasn’t supposed to have pets, Molnar brought her yellow Labrador, Hudson, and even allowed her youngest son to visit during school holidays, with the boy still staying by mid-January.

Additionally, Molnar was accused of not cleaning up after herself in common areas, and Jamie claimed she would often threaten Hudson if he made a mess in the garden or inside the house.

The Nordenstroms tried to maintain a harmonious environment, even paying Molnar to engage in activities with their son or to prepare gourmet meals. But upon returning from a trip to Philip’s native Sweden in June, they discovered teenagers gathering around the pool and no space left in the refrigerators for their groceries, while the vacuum cleaners were clogged with dog hair.

After putting a stop to a party, Jamie went to bed, only to be awakened by noise in the kitchen. Confronting Molnar led to an angry exchange about perceived humiliation towards her son.

Jamie reflected, “The whole situation was so strange. We didn’t really know what to do.”

However, Molnar claimed that the Nordenstroms were aware of her plans to have Hudson live with her and that Jamie had encouraged her children to throw a year-end gathering.

After firing Molnar, Jamie still offered to assist her in finding a new place and arranged for her to be paid through the end of the month. But Molnar quickly asserted tenant rights, claiming ownership of her living situation.

Jamie began investigating Molnar’s background and discovered a past dispute in 2021 that had financial implications for Molnar, who had no criminal history but an identified pattern of similar landlord-tenant issues.

In a legal twist, the attorney indicated that Molnar was a licensee under state law, therefore authorized to live there without a traditional rental agreement. The couple attempted to request her resignation, but this did not go as planned, escalating into a standoff with police involvement.

In a text exchange, Molnar informed Jamie about interviewing for jobs, adding a seemingly questionable promise not to be around for long. Tensions escalated further, with accusations flying back and forth.

Eventually, the Nordenstroms filed a lawsuit claiming Molnar was a “professional fraudster” with a history of exploiting affluent individuals and overstepping legal boundaries.

A judge ultimately ordered Molnar to leave. When Jamie checked the guest house, she found it in disarray, reporting damage that led her to suspect more than just the dog was to blame for the mess.

In a surprising turn, Molnar insisted she was the true victim and hinted at mishaps that felt far-fetched.

Previously involved in the luxury modeling scene and married to a notable restaurateur, Molnar’s story took another twist when reports surfaced about her lawsuits for child support against a previous partner.

Molnar also filed a wrongful termination claim against Jamie, accusing her of fabricating allegations and questioning Jamie’s mental stability. As tensions boiled, a judge imposed restraining orders against both parties.
