Former Knicks shooter Steve Novak becomes an analyst for MSG

Steve Novak Joins MSG Networks as Analyst

MSG Networks has brought on Steve Novak for a significant role as a bench analyst.

The 42-year-old former shooter, who spent two seasons with the Knicks, will step in as an analyst for around 12 games this season, filling in for Clyde Frazier, as announced by MSG Networks on Thursday.

His first game will be this Friday night against the Bulls in Chicago, as the Knicks aim to close a two-game deficit.

Novak takes over the role from Jamal Crawford, who was Frazier’s backup last season but has moved to NBC to cover national NBA games.

Throughout his 11-year NBA career, Novak was mostly a role player. He really found his groove with the Knicks, especially during the Linsanity period from 2012 to 2013, when the team won 54 games.

Celebrating three-point shots with a championship belt became Novak’s signature move.

“I played for nine NBA teams, but I can sincerely say my two years with the New York Knicks stand out as my most memorable seasons,” Novak stated.

“Having the chance to back up the legendary Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier in some games is amazing. I’m looking forward to discussing Knicks basketball with some of New York’s best fans.”

Frazier, now 80, is still very much in the game, although he has reduced his workload in recent years. Last season, Crawford joined for about 10 games with MSG.

Interestingly, MSG had considered hiring Mark Jackson as Frazier’s backup two seasons ago, but that deal fell through. There was some tension that led to complications, particularly involving a past disagreement between Jackson and Knicks assistant Darren Urman.

Before this role, Novak gained valuable experience as a games and studio analyst at FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin from 2017 to 2025.
