Jordan Travis Retires from Professional Football

The New York Jets had high hopes when they drafted Jordan Travis in the fifth round last year, especially after he dealt with a significant foot injury in his last season at Florida State. Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out as planned, and Travis ultimately announced his retirement shortly after this year’s draft.

In a statement released by the Jets back in April, Travis reflected on his difficult journey: “On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn. I tried my best to rehabilitate, but despite all efforts, my foot was not responding the way we had hoped. After much prayer and consultation with doctors, medical professionals, and my agent, I have been medically advised to retire from the sport I love.”

Amid a backdrop of comments from Jets owner Woody Johnson directed at quarterback Justin Fields, Travis opened up on his podcast about the direct discussions he had with Johnson regarding his injury. He mentioned, “I have to say, man, no offense, but I’ve never been on the field and played… I’ve had people say things about my feet.” It seemed like Johnson’s remarks were somewhat off-the-cuff, leaving Travis feeling a bit unsettled. “They were kind of upsetting, but it kind of rolled over my head,” he added, alluding to the lack of empathy in how they were delivered.

As for Johnson’s inquiry about Travis getting healthy, the quarterback expressed disappointment, stating, “It was always comments like that,” suggesting more sensitivity was expected.

The Jets did not comment on Travis’s remarks when approached for a response. Meanwhile, Justin Fields showcased his resilience by leading the Jets to an unexpected 39-38 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals just before their bye week, which Travis found inspiring. He noted Fields’ demeanor during a press conference, saying it was “so cool and so inspiring” and he felt compelled to share it on Instagram, recognizing this moment as Fields’ opportunity to shine.

Interestingly, it looks like the Jets were considering starting Tyrod Taylor to replace Fields, who had been unable to play due to a knee injury. It’s a lot going on, and, well, the emotional ups and downs seem to be part of the game.

As the first win of the season for the Jets, this moment certainly carries a lot of weight, with Fields expressing that those days leading up to the game were deeply emotional. It remains to be seen how the team will proceed without Travis.
