Kathryn Bigelow stands by the realism of 'House of Dynamite' following Pentagon backlash.

Kathryn Bigelow, known for her recent film “The House of Dynamite,” has responded to Pentagon criticism regarding a scene that claimed the nation’s nuclear threat detection system had only a 50% effectiveness rate. In an internal memo, the Pentagon labeled the film’s assertions as misleading.

Defense officials remarked that while the film is “compelling” and meant for entertainment, it doesn’t accurately represent real-world experiments and diverges from the truth significantly.

Bigelow, along with screenwriter Noah Oppenheim, countered that their research validates the events portrayed in the film, expressing satisfaction that it has sparked conversations among influential figures. “In an ideal scenario, culture could really influence policy,” Bigelow mentioned, appreciating discussions on nuclear proliferation.

Oppenheim concurred, emphasizing that any doubts raised can be debated within the defense community, suggesting that the dialogue is broader than just their perspectives as filmmakers.

Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) also weighed in, asserting that, in reality, nuclear missile defense systems can achieve a 50% accuracy rate when given 30 minutes to detect an incoming threat. In his remarks, he lauded the film for dramatizing the critical half-hour window from missile launch to impact, stressing the urgent need for global disarmament over reliance on missile defense systems.

During the film’s creation, Bigelow noted that defense specialists served as their guiding principles. “My goal was to keep it real and authentic,” she stated, comparing this film’s focus on realism to her previous works like “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Hurt Locker.” She aimed to provide audiences with an authentic glimpse into strategic command situations, something that isn’t easily accessible.
