Islanders Experience Chaotic Loss to Hurricanes

RALEIGH — It felt like a flashback to the dreaded Mike Milbury era, but this time, it was 20 years later in North Carolina.

Matthew Barzal found himself in hot water for being late to the team bus, receiving a healthy scratch as a punishment. Meanwhile, top prospect Cal Ritchie faced a canceled flight, leaving him stranded in Bridgeport and unable to join the Islanders in Raleigh.

To top it off, the Islanders dropped their third consecutive game, losing 6-2 to the Hurricanes, culminating a nightmarish 12 hours.

David Rittich started in goal, but things quickly unraveled as he allowed three goals on just his first seven shots. The rest of the team couldn’t seem to settle down either.

Scratching Barzal was supposed to sharpen the team’s focus; it didn’t. The Islanders displayed sluggish defense and struggled to maintain control of the puck under pressure.

Matthew Schaefer, who managed to score during a power play in the first period, couldn’t salvage the night for a visibly outmatched roster.

Just over five minutes into the game, Bradley Nadeau netted his first NHL goal, quickly followed by a short-handed goal from former Islander Mike Riley. Both markers came from breakdowns in defense that Rittich should have handled better.

Jordan Martinook benefited from a rebound from Jordan Staal to score a hat trick, marking a pivotal moment just past the halfway point in the first period.

Schaefer’s power-play goal in the second gave hope, but the Islanders couldn’t gather enough momentum to make a real impact.

If there was any lingering hope of salvaging a point, Jackson Blake dashed it early in the third, scoring just 1:51 in after receiving a pass from Taylor Hall.

Simon Holmstrom managed to score midway through the third, but Andrei Svechnikov responded quickly, maintaining a three-goal cushion for the Hurricanes. Logan Stankoven capped off the scoring with just 11 seconds remaining.

Accountability seemed scattered. Adam Pelech and Ryan Purok found themselves on the ice for a couple of goals that reflected the team’s overall struggle.

Max Tsyplakov had a particularly rough outing, while Tony DeAngelo was caught off-guard on one of the short-handed goals. Shuffling Barzal out for Casey Cizikas on the top line didn’t yield the desired results either.

Meanwhile, the situation with Barzal and Ritchie made an already tough night even more complicated. The frustrations appeared to stem from general manager Mathieu Darche, with coach Patrick Roy clarifying that the issues with Barzal were not his standards, but rather the organization’s overall expectations.

As they tried to ward off potential injuries, Lowry found himself without an extra forward, and whether Ritchie would arrive on time depended largely on the weather.

The Islanders’ decision to send a message was clear, but it could have cost them dearly in points.
