Pelicans Coach’s Job Security in Question Amid Struggles

It seems LSU isn’t the only institution in Louisiana facing challenges regarding job security.

The winless Pelicans, sitting at 0-4, are reportedly weighing the possibility of firing their head coach, Willie Green. This comes as discussions unfold around the team, according to various sources.

Insider reports suggest a prevailing sentiment within the league that Green is struggling to maintain control in the locker room. Players are showing signs of being “apathetic and frustrated,” with visible expressions of discontent during games, in the locker room, and even in the tunnel. It’s kind of concerning, really.

After wrapping up a three-game road trip in Oklahoma City, some are speculating that a coaching change might even happen before the weekend’s final game.

While the Pelicans’ rocky start could be overshadowed by issues at LSU, like the firing of football coach Brian Kelly and the resignation of athletic director Scott Woodward—both influenced by the governor—the situation in New Orleans feels tense.

Former head of basketball operations, David Griffin, apparently pushed for Green’s dismissal earlier on, but ownership didn’t support that move. Interestingly, Griffin ended up being let go instead.

Joe Dumars took over as the team’s vice president of basketball operations in April, opting to retain Green despite a disastrous season. Now, if Dumars is having second thoughts, he might be inclined to support a change, especially since he believes more in the decision-maker he’s recently brought on board.

This season, the Pelicans have struggled to put together compelling performances. They stand as one of only three winless teams, and notably the only one in the Western Conference.

Initially, they opened the season with narrow leads against both the Grizzlies and Spurs, but have since experienced staggering losses to the Celtics and Nuggets—by 32 and 34 points, respectively—which has left many feeling quite disappointed.

Currently, the team is allowing an average of 123 points per game. In a recent loss to Denver, players were visibly dejected, with some shaking their heads as the Nuggets dominated early in the game.

Furthermore, the franchise star, Zion Williamson, was reported to have had discussions with the Knicks during the offseason and seems to be connecting more with assistant coach James Borrego, who could potentially step up if Green is let go.

The Pelicans are hoping to finally secure their first win when they face the Clippers on Friday night, but the challenge grows tougher with a match against the defending champion Thunder on Sunday.
