Stephen King on “It: Welcome to Derry”
Stephen King has recently shared his impressions of HBO’s “It: Welcome to Derry,” a prequel series that delves deeper into the universe of his famous 1986 novel, “It.” He expressed an appreciation for the series, stating, “I really like Welcome to Derry.” He highlighted its atmospheric horror and striking visuals, particularly mentioning a chilling scene involving a pickle jar.
King also commended director Andy Muschietti, who helmed both blockbuster films and returned to direct this new series alongside his sister, Barbara Muschietti. “Andy Muschietti is a genius when it comes to horror,” he remarked, suggesting that viewers will likely experience some of the depicted scenes in their nightmares.
When discussing Pennywise, King reassured fans that they wouldn’t be let down. Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as the terrifying clown character in the prequel. King concluded with a tease, saying, “Even when Pennywise finally shows up, he’s still terrifyingly scary.”
Prior to the show’s premiere, the creators praised King for his involvement. Andy Muschietti revealed that King played a supportive role during the production without exerting control over it. “He blesses and screens everything we show him, but he doesn’t control everything we do,” he explained. For the most part, King seemed enthusiastic and receptive to their work.
Barbara Muschietti added that King is not just a brilliant writer but also a wonderful person. Co-showrunner Brad Caleb Kane referred to him as the “godfather” of the series, emphasizing King’s generous spirit regarding his work and the universe he created. Kane shared that King encouraged them to play within the world he crafted.
The premiere aired on October 26th on HBO and HBO Max, starting with the story of young Matty Clements sneaking into a screening of “The Music Man.” After escaping and embarking on a road trip with her family, things take a dark turn as her mother goes into labor, introducing a grotesque creature into the mix.
Eventually, Matty’s pacifier ends up in the sewers, pulling her into darkness. Months later, a group of local kids, wracked with curiosity and concern about Matty’s fate, decide to revisit the Capital Theatre where it all began.
As the night progresses, chaos unfolds in the theater, punctuated by flickering lights and a sinister resurgence of the winged creature. The episode closes on a suspenseful cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for more.
New episodes of “It: Welcome to Derry” will continue to roll out on HBO and HBO Max every Sunday, with the second episode set to coincide with Halloween festivities on October 31st.
