Miami Dolphins Part Ways with General Manager Chris Grier
The Miami Dolphins made a significant change on Friday, announcing that they have mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Chris Grier. This decision seems to follow a frustrating season, particularly highlighted by a heavy loss to the Baltimore Ravens at home, which may have been the last straw for Grier and the team.
Stephen A. Smith has voiced his opinion on the matter, implying that both parties might have used technicalities to avoid explicitly stating that Grier was fired. He also raised questions regarding the timing of Grier’s departure, especially since it came before head coach Mike McDaniel’s, suggesting a potential discrepancy given Grier’s race.
“This is ridiculous. Was that the first firing? Really? Is that how we’re doing this?” Smith said, connecting the situation to both quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and McDaniel. “So my brother gets fired first?” He expressed his frustration during an appearance shortly after the news broke.
He further stated, “I’m not claiming he doesn’t deserve to be criticized. But if the job isn’t done, the job isn’t done.” Smith’s remarks reflect a complex mixture of respect for Grier while also acknowledging the challenges faced during his tenure.
Grier, who is 55 years old, has been with the Dolphins since 2000 and has served as the team’s general manager since 2016. According to managing general partner Stephen M. Ross, the decision comes as the team looks to improve and recognize that change is needed, stating, “We must improve in 2025, 2026 and beyond, and that must start now.” Champ Kelly has been appointed as interim general manager as they work on finding a replacement.
Over Grier’s nearly ten years as general manager, the team has accumulated a 77-80 record with three playoff appearances, but unfortunately, each of those seasons ended in the wild card round.
