Tragic Death of Australian Cricket Player
Communities in Australia are in mourning following the death of a 17-year-old boy who was injured during cricket practice. The incident occurred on Tuesday at Ferntree Gully in eastern Melbourne when Ben Austin was struck in the neck by a cricket ball. Initial reports indicated he was taken to the hospital in critical condition, placed on advanced life support, but sadly, he passed away the following day.
In a statement, Ferntree Gully Cricket Club expressed their devastation at the loss, stating, “We are completely devastated by Ben’s passing, and the impact of his death will be felt by everyone in the cricket community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew Ben and the joy he brought.”
Austin’s father, Jace, released a heartfelt statement on Thursday, saying, “We are completely devastated by the loss of our beautiful Ben, who passed away early Thursday morning. To Tracy and I, Ben was a beloved son and a much-loved brother to Cooper and Zach; he was a shining light in the lives of our family and friends.”
Witnesses reported that the tragic incident happened in front of Austin’s teammates. The family mentioned their desire to support the young men who were bowling at the nets during the accident, highlighting the emotional toll it took on everyone involved.
Despite this heartbreaking tragedy, the family found some solace in knowing that Ben was enjoying something he loved. They remarked, “Although this tragedy took Ben from us, we take some comfort in the fact that he was doing what he always loved, heading to the nets with his friends. He loved cricket; it was one of the joys of his life.”
Tributes have been pouring in from across the country, with a moment of silence observed before matches in the ongoing T20 International series against India on Friday. This loss echoes a similar tragedy over a decade ago when cricketer Philip Hughes died after being struck by a ball during a match, a stark reminder of the risks involved in the sport.
The cricket community, family, and friends are now left to reflect on Ben’s promising life and the joy he brought to those around him.
