Islanders redeem disappointing road trip with victory against Capitals

Islanders Secure a Hard-Fought Victory Against Capitals

WASHINGTON — Well, this week had its ups and downs for the Islanders.

Though it was a rough finish to their four-game road trip, the team managed to snag a gritty 3-1 win over the Capitals on Friday night at Capital One Arena. Ilya Sorokin really stepped up, perhaps delivering his best performance of the season, and Bo Horvat’s game-winning goal helped secure that much-needed victory.

Matt Barzal made his return after sitting out Thursday’s game due to arriving late for the bus. And rookie Cal Ritchie played on Barzal’s left wing for his first NHL game, although he didn’t contribute much offensively early on.

In fact, the Islanders found it tough to break out of their own zone, let alone generate much offense against the Capitals. They leaned heavily on Sorokin, who found himself covering for his teammates’ mistakes throughout the evening.

Following a shaky start to the season, Sorokin’s ability to keep the Isles competitive was a welcome development, even if it’s not a situation the team would prefer to be in.

This was a crucial safety net for them, especially coming off two games in three days.

Despite Washington having numerous early opportunities, Sorokin’s performance allowed the game to remain tied at 1 heading into the third period.

That’s when coach Roy decided to shake things up, moving Barzal onto Horvat’s line with Emil Heinemann and shifting Ritchie to center between Jonathan Drouin and Kyle Palmieri.

Finally, after two periods of sluggish play, the Islanders kicked it into gear. Heinemann set up Horvat to give them a 2-1 lead just 4:29 into the third.

Even though they struggled on the power play, going 0-for-5, they managed to hold their lead for over 15 minutes. Sorokin was key to earning those two vital points, showcasing the ability of star goalies to uplift their teams during tough stretches.

To wrap up the game, Barzal scored an empty-net goal, securing the win.

After a scoreless first period, Washington drew first blood just 4:48 into the second when Tom Wilson capitalized on a rebound from Jacob Chychurun.

Even while shorthanded, Simon Holmstrom set up Jean-Gabriel Pageau, putting one on the board. Though Washington contested the goal on offside grounds, the call remained with the confirmation that Pageau may have entered the zone a bit early.

It was a challenging debut for Ritchie, who was caught in the penalty box at the time of Pageau’s goal and later took another penalty. He seemed to be adjusting to the game’s pace after being away, but he performed notably better in the third period.

Most Islanders didn’t have standout performances, but Holmstrom had a solid night on the third line with Pageau and Anders Lee.

The pairing of Alexander Romanov and Tony DeAngelo had been struggling before Romanov’s injury, and since his return, he hasn’t looked quite right in the last two games.

However, the focus largely lay on Sorokin, the pivotal player for the Islanders, finally shining when they needed it most. If this game marked a turning point for him after his early-season challenges, it was just what the team required at this moment.
