Becky Robinson’s Rising Fame Through Comedy
Stand-up comedian Becky Robinson is experiencing a surge in her career, which she attributes to a wig, some of her mom’s old golf attire, and a series of what she describes as “crazy improvisational episodes” that she filmed and shared on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview in October, Robinson discussed her new special, “Entitled,” and the origins of her widely recognized character, the “Entitled Housewife.” This character, a playful take on the wine mom and country club scene, gained traction online during the pandemic and contributed significantly to Robinson’s following.
“I stumbled upon this character when I was home alone. My parents had stepped out, and out of nowhere, I found myself shouting at this imaginary husband, Scott, just like my mom does when she’s upset with my dad,” she recalled.
One of her early videos, the “Eligible Housewife,” features a comic scenario where a character struggles to pull out an SUV from the driveway en route to brunch at a country club, showcasing her comedic style.
With an exaggerated golf visor and oversized sunglasses, she hilariously instructs her imaginary son, Dashiell, to clear the way, stating, “We’re already fifteen minutes late for brunch!” The absurdity continues as she insists, “It’s your loss. You should have been quicker!”
Robinson detailed how this playful improv led to the creation of a whole fictional family of “housewives” engaged in comedic rants. “That was the day I began shouting at everyone around me: my kids, my best friend Trish, and even her golfing buddies,” she mentioned, describing it as an impromptu and manic creative episode.
Her inspirations? Well, they came from observing her parents during the pandemic. “I moved back home during that time, and it felt like they were embracing every moment. My dad was thrilled that country clubs were still open, while my mom, after battling serious health issues, was ready to dive back into social life,” she explained. “Watching them made me think, ‘Wow, you guys are really getting into it!'”
So, she dug through her parents’ closet, found some skorts and visors, and began improvising her now-famous character.
Interestingly enough, Robinson didn’t anticipate how portraying this “entitled housewife” would influence her career. “At first, it was about bringing some joy to myself during a tough time,” she said, adding that her content unexpectedly resonated with many others. “I shared my first video just hoping it might bring a smile. Then it went viral, which was a shock.” Celebrities, like Chris Pratt, even reached out, expressing interest in being part of her project.
Fast forward several videos and millions of views later, “Entitled Housewife” has become well-known, even co-starring in Robinson’s ongoing “Members Only” tour. The special, filmed during the tour’s Boston stop, is uniquely split between Robinson performing as herself and as her character.
In the first part of her set, she humorously reflects on daily life and the struggles of modern womanhood. The second act features the “Entitled Housewife” making a dramatic entrance, turning the performance into a lively event.
The audience engagement has been remarkable, with many attendees showing up in character-themed costumes, including visors and tennis gear. “Yes, we have a cult following,” Robinson admitted, recalling the excitement when fans first began dressing up.
Robinson’s bond with her female supporters is significant enough that she’s planning her inaugural golf tournament, the Eligible Housewives Classic, in Tulum, Mexico. “We found an incredible course and have other activities planned for fans,” she shared, explaining her desire to spend quality time with them.
Tickets for the tournament are available for the first 100 fans who purchase, and there are exciting perks, including unique entertainment arrangements. “Oh, and we’ve hired a Chippendale guy to serve drinks—why not add some fun?” she quipped.
Her feature is available now on her website, where fans can also find details about the upcoming golf tournament.
