North Carolina Representative Resigns Following Felony Charges

A Democratic state representative in North Carolina, Cecil Brockman, has announced his resignation after facing felony charges related to alleged sexual activities with a minor.

Brockman’s decision, which comes amid bipartisan calls for him to step down, follows an announcement from the North Carolina House Speaker regarding a potential committee investigation into misconduct allegations against him. In a statement, Brockman, 41, expressed the seriousness of the situation: “I currently face criminal charges in Guilford County. Those charges require me to concentrate on defending myself.” He continued, “As a result, I can no longer fulfill my responsibilities to the constituents of Guilford County. Therefore, I am resigning my position effective immediately.”

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall remarked that Brockman’s resignation was “the right thing to do for voters and the North Carolina House of Representatives.” He noted, “This spares the House a difficult expulsion process and provides closure to this troubling chapter.”

According to court records, Brockman is facing two counts of statutory rape involving a child aged 13 to 15, along with two counts of indecent assault. Allegations suggest he engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old boy in August and is also charged with attempts to commit a “lewd and lascivious act” against the minor.

Reports indicate that while the victim was hospitalized, Brockman attempted to contact him and sought to use his position to gather information about the victim’s location.

Brockman was first elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2014, representing parts of High Point and Guilford County, and has served on various committees, primarily concerning education and budget matters. His resignation has prompted prompt reactions from both state legislative leaders and Democratic Governor Josh Stein, who have been urging him to step down since his arrest three weeks earlier.

On Friday, the House Clerk’s Office received a letter from Brockman requesting immediate resignation. As of now, he remains in custody with bail set at over $1 million. A court hearing regarding a request for bail reduction is set for Monday.
