A family of five in New Jersey faced a devastating loss on Halloween night when a fire broke out in their Patterson home, claiming the lives of their two children. The children were found deceased in the bathroom as firefighters battled the blaze.

The victims included three siblings, aged 14, 12, and 7, along with their parents, both 38, according to fire officials. Tragically, the entire family was discovered on the second floor of the house, Paterson Fire Chief Alejandro Alicia reported.

“To lose all five members of our family like this is beyond words,” Alicia noted. “This level of loss is extremely rare. It’s a heartbreaking situation.” He elaborated that three firefighters responding to the scene were relatives of the victims.

Images capturing the destruction depict a charred home, with the flames ravaging the exterior and exposing parts of the building’s framework. On the upper floor, windows had been blown out, leaving only frames behind.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire ignited on the first floor and rapidly moved to the higher levels. Officials pointed to strong winds as a major factor that intensified the blaze.

“It’s believed that it started on the first floor,” Alicia explained. “When the initial crews arrived, there was heavy fire at the back of the house. The winds caused it to escalate quickly.”

The incident also led to some injuries among firefighters, with the chief and several personnel requiring hospitalization. Additionally, six people were evacuated from the premises. Details about the family have not been fully disclosed, but a neighbor described them as “truly nice people.” John Miller, a resident nearby, shared his shock, stating, “They were always friendly—waving and honking when I passed by. It’s just hard to believe this happened.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and, at this stage, there is no indication of foul play. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office is encouraging anyone with information to reach out to them.
