Ja Morant expresses frustration with the new Grizzlies coaching team

Challenges for the Memphis Grizzlies

Things aren’t looking great in Memphis.

Star player Ja Morant didn’t hold back when he criticized the coaching staff following a disappointing loss to the Lakers, where the Grizzlies fell 117-112. When asked about the team’s struggles, he simply said, “Ask the coaching staff.”

It didn’t end there. When pressed for personal thoughts on his performance, Morant added, “According to them, to be honest, you probably shouldn’t play me.” This comment essentially indicated frustration, hinting that perhaps the team’s communication needs work.

Morant’s performance was less than stellar; he only managed eight points, shooting 3-of-14 in that game. His playing time has dipped this season too—averaging just 28.5 minutes, which is a career low.

Critics, including former NBA star Blake Griffin, have voiced their concerns. During a segment on Amazon Prime’s postgame coverage, Griffin remarked, “As a guy who makes $40 million and has to be the leader of the team, I don’t like that.” He wondered whether Morant was unwell or injured but emphasized that these attitudes signal trouble.

Morant might still be finding his footing under the new system. This season marks the first full year for head coach Tuomas Isalo, who took over after the firing of Taylor Jenkins. Jenkins had been with the Grizzlies for six seasons.

Following this recent defeat, the Grizzlies now sit at 3-3 for the season.
