Former FDNY Chief Laura Kavanaugh Seeks Deputy Mayor Role

Laura Kavanaugh, the former Director of the FDNY, is reportedly advocating for Zoran Mamdani as New York City’s next deputy security mayor, should a socialist candidate win the mayoral election, as sources have indicated.

Once the city’s first female fire chief, Kavanaugh resigned in July 2024 amid growing scrutiny and has since maintained a low profile away from the public eye.

Pressure had mounted for her resignation due to several controversies, including a highly publicized apology she sent to Attorney General Tish James after pro-Trump firefighters booed James at a statehood ceremony in March 2024. In her apology, she expressed regret about not being able to manage the situation better.

Kavanaugh faced criticism for issues such as decreasing emergency response times, a rise in lithium-ion battery fires, and an age-discrimination lawsuit stemming from her demotions of senior department members.

When questioned about her rumored lobbying for a role in Mamdani’s potential administration, Kavanaugh categorically denied it, stating, “This is not 100% true. I have never spoken to Mamdani’s camp about this and I have no intention of doing so.”

Yet, some of her ex-colleagues from the FDNY are anticipating a possible comeback. An FDNY official expressed concerns regarding a partnership between Kavanaugh and Mamdani, stating that it could bring back harmful policies that had already failed in the past.

Discussions among FDNY insiders suggest Kavanaugh might be eyeing a broader role that would extend beyond the fire department to include oversight of various city agencies like the Department of Corrections and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. One Democratic insider mentioned that Kavanaugh craves recognition and wants to reassert her influence.

Recently, she has been making public appearances and expressing her opinions, including criticisms aimed at Mayor Adams and Robert Tucker, who took over her previous role.

Last week, Kavanaugh participated in a panel discussion regarding transportation safety, where she urged the FDNY to take a more active role in ensuring public safety on the streets. She reflected on her time in the mayor’s office, noting that street safety was not prioritized during that period.

In a recent statement, she conveyed her concerns over the hiring practices at the FDNY, asserting that the decisions made could hinder the success of aspiring cadets.

Mamdani’s current deputy mayor, Kaz Daughtry, earned $276,588 last year.
