SMU Upsets No. 10 Miami in Overtime

SMU achieved an unexpected victory over No. 10 Miami, winning 26-20 in overtime at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Saturday.

In overtime, Miami had the first possession, but quarterback Carson Beck threw an interception just before reaching the end zone, allowing SMU to take control. This was one of two interceptions Beck had during the game.

A field goal could have clinched the win for SMU, but instead, they turned to running back TJ Harden, who scored from one yard out to secure the upset.

Celebrations erupted as players and fans joined together on the field after Harden’s decisive touchdown. It was quite the scene—almost like something out of a movie.

Interestingly, just before the game, SMU head coach Rhett Lashley had signed a seven-year contract extension and then led his team in this thrilling first game after his new deal.

Lashley’s defense effectively held Miami’s notable offense in check throughout the matchup. On the other side, quarterback Kevin Jennings had a standout performance, completing 29 of 44 passes for 365 yards and one touchdown.

Jennings made a significant contribution late in the fourth quarter. Trailing 20-17, he directed an 11-play drive that covered 69 yards in just under two minutes, allowing kicker Sam Keltner to tie the game with a 38-yard field goal.

This win brings SMU’s record to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in ACC play. Next up for them is a game against Boston College, which stands at 1-7.

Conversely, Miami drops to 6-2 for the season and 2-2 in the ACC, with their next game scheduled against Syracuse, who currently sit at 3-6.
