Ja Morant receives a one-game suspension following remarks about Grizzlies coaching

Ja Morant Suspended for Conduct Issues

Ja Morant, the star player of the Memphis Grizzlies, has been handed a one-game suspension for behavior deemed detrimental to the team, as announced by the organization.

After a recent loss to the Lakers, Morant expressed criticism towards the coaching staff when asked about the game’s outcome, suggesting that people should “ask the coaching staff” instead of him.

When pressed for further thoughts on their third defeat of the season, he mentioned, “They told me, honestly, they probably don’t want me to play. That’s basically what the message was.”

Following the game, coach Tuomas Isalo reportedly confronted Morant over issues related to his leadership and effort in front of the team. Sources suggested that Morant reacted in a way that was deemed “inappropriate and negative.”

With a new coaching staff in place, Morant, who has averaged 20.8 points across six games this season, was expected to play a crucial role following the firing of Taylor Jenkins last season.

Morant, who has a staggering $197 million contract and is signed for at least two more years, previously averaged 27.4 points per game during the 2021-22 season, contributing significantly to the Grizzlies’ success in the playoffs and being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

However, the team has struggled since, failing to advance past the first round of the playoffs last season. In a surprise move, Jenkins was fired at the end of March, leading to Isalo stepping in as interim coach.

This season started positively for Memphis, winning three of their first five games and holding a 14-point lead over the Lakers at halftime. Yet, Luka Doncic and his impressive 44-point performance helped the Lakers come back to win by five points.

Former NBA star Blake Griffin, during an Amazon Prime postgame analysis, voiced his displeasure with Morant’s actions, especially considering the high salary he’s earning this year as a supposed leader of the team. Griffin said, “I don’t know if he wasn’t feeling well or if he was injured, but that to me is a very bad sign and … something that has to change.”

Morant will sit out the Grizzlies’ upcoming road game against the Raptors but is expected to be back in action when Memphis faces Detroit at home on Monday.
