Obama Blames Republicans for Government Shutdown

Former President Barack Obama criticized Republicans during a rally in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday, attributing blame for the ongoing federal government shutdown to them.

Speaking to supporters of Abigail Spanberger, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate and former congresswoman, Obama remarked, “The government is shut down, and the Republicans in control of Congress seem uninterested in finding a solution. They’re absent, not attending meetings. Where are they? What are they doing?”

The shutdown, which started on October 1, has raised concerns among Democrats who fear that failing to extend Affordable Care Act tax cuts could lead to increased premiums, while cuts to Medicaid might leave many uninsured due to the unresolved spending bill.

In response, Republicans have pointed fingers at Democrats, with former President Trump labeling them “crazy lunatics” and claiming they are to blame for the shutdown.

Warnings of a Prolonged Shutdown

Trump expressed doubts about Democrats’ competence, saying, “The shutdown is because they don’t know what they’re doing.” He asserted that if Democrats simply agreed to things, the country could easily return to normal.

He also proposed the abolition of the filibuster, stating that Republicans should remember that Democrats would seize the chance to eliminate it whenever they get the opportunity. Trump’s rhetoric suggested that this issue transcends just a government shutdown; he viewed it as a matter of survival for the country.

While addressing the shutdown, Obama refrained from assigning blame to Democrats and instead focused on the current political climate. He lamented, “Our country is in a pretty bleak place. Every day brings new lawlessness, recklessness, and just madness.”

Debate on Political Consequences

He humorously noted that daily life feels like “Halloween, except all tricks and no treats,” emphasizing that current circumstances are worse than anticipated, despite previous warnings.

Obama highlighted that while the economy may show favor for the wealthy, the average person hasn’t seen improvements in their cost of living, stressing, “What they’re not focusing on is helping you.” He pointed out the lack of serious proposals from Republicans to address issues like housing and food costs.

He encouraged attendees to vote for Spanberger, who is in a competitive race against Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears. Following the rally, Obama headed to New Jersey to support another Democratic candidate, Miki Sherrill, in her challenge against Republican Jack Ciatarelli.
