FBI Files Reveal Details of Smith’s Investigation
John Lauro, who represented Donald Trump in the case led by former special counsel Jack Smith regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol protests, discussed the implications of newly released FBI files. These files indicated that Smith had issued nearly 200 subpoenas targeting officials and organizations affiliated with the Republican Party. Lauro, during his appearance on Breitbart News Saturday, characterized the investigation as a politically motivated effort by the Justice Department.
His remarks followed the release of these files by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), which raised concerns about Congress members being included as targets. Lauro expressed that the most shocking aspect of this situation is how the investigation seemed to be aimed directly at members of Congress.
According to a report by Jasmine Jordan from Breitbart News, Smith’s investigation had faced scrutiny in the past for secretly obtaining the phone and financial records of Republican officials and party affiliates. “This material should have been handed over to us, but it was never provided,” Lauro noted, adding that this information could have been crucial for defending Trump and Republican officials against the Biden administration’s actions.
Lauro has emerged with a strong critique of Smith’s motives, asserting that there was a lack of legitimacy in the investigation. He claimed it amounted to suppressing a political movement, which he found profoundly shocking, especially given the backing from various institutions like the media and the Democratic Party.
He echoed Biden’s earlier remarks, recalling that the President had openly stated, post-midterm elections, that efforts would be made to prevent Trump from returning to power. It seemed, Lauro suggested, that such intentions were not truly respectful of constitutional bounds.
Moreover, he stated that right after Trump’s announcement of his campaign, the so-called “prosecutorial pit bull,” Jack Smith, was unleashed to pursue these indictments, which Lauro describes as false.
Adding more depth to the conversation, Lauro mentioned that Republican senators and congressmen were also targets, which he views as shocking news about the investigation. He maintained that Smith was aware of the political nature of the defense they were mounting, framing it as a vendetta against Trump and his supporters for their political ambitions.
In Lauro’s view, Smith should be required to testify before Congress regarding his actions aimed at undermining Trump’s presidential candidacy. He argues that the evidence against Smith’s methods is clear, and it’s an important issue that needs addressing for the American people.
