There’s a “good chance” that the U.S. military might “intervene” in Nigeria concerning the ongoing violence against Christians.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged the Defense Department to “prepare for possible action,” asserting that an attack would be “swift, vicious, and sweet.” He also warned he would “cut off all aid and assistance to Nigeria” if the government failed to halt the killings of Christians.
“If Nigeria’s leaders continue to ignore the slaughter of Christians, there’s a real possibility that the U.S. will withdraw support and come in ‘guns blazing’ to eliminate the terrorists responsible for these horrific acts,” Trump stated in his message.
He continued, “I’m directing the Army to prepare for action. If we do attack, it’ll be just as quick and fierce as the terrorist thugs attacking our cherished Christians! Nigerian authorities need to act swiftly!”
Trump’s comments follow earlier statements where he expressed that Christians are facing a serious threat in Nigeria, highlighting that “thousands are being killed” by radical Islamic groups.
The president also moved to classify Nigeria as a “country of special concern” and called on Representative Riley Moore and House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole to promptly investigate and report back to him.
Trump remarked, “Christianity is in a crisis in Nigeria. Thousands have lost their lives. Islamic extremists are behind this genocide.” He designated Nigeria as a “Country of Special Concern,” emphasizing that such violence against Christians cannot continue.
In response, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tugaa, refuted the claims of genocide. “Let’s clarify, there is no and will never be genocide in Nigeria,” Tugaa asserted in a statement to a news outlet.
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a Muslim, dismissed allegations of religious persecution against Christians as “falsehoods.”
Years ago, in 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls from a Christian community in Chibok, Borno state. More than 90 of those girls are still unaccounted for, many indoctrinated into extremist ideologies.
Nicki Minaj echoed Trump’s concerns about the “genocide” against Christians in Nigeria, expressing her gratitude for his attention to the issue. “We should respect each other’s beliefs,” she wrote in a post.
Sen. Ted Cruz also raised awareness regarding the mass killings, alleging that Nigerian authorities have been complicit in the violence against Christians. He stated, “It’s imperative to hold those accountable.” His proposed Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act aims to impose sanctions on those responsible.
