Trump Invests in New Jersey and Virginia Elections

President Donald Trump is channeling his remaining funds into the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, scheduled for Tuesday. This move aims to rally MAGA supporters, who often miss elections when Trump isn’t on the ballot.

According to reports, Trump’s political team is withdrawing funds from his extensive campaign reserves, directing about $1 million to each state for targeted voter outreach efforts. Joe Gruters, the chairman of the Trump-aligned Republican National Committee (RNC), noted on Fox News that there’s increasing financial backing from Trump and the Republican Party to mobilize voters.

Interestingly, although Trump lost New Jersey and Virginia in the last presidential election, he had previously won both by substantial margins.

It’s worth mentioning, Trump won’t be voting in these elections but intends to play a significant role in the 2025 presidential election.

These two states are unique, as they are the only ones holding gubernatorial elections in the year following a presidential election, which often draws considerable national interest. Observers see this as an important precursor to next year’s midterm elections, where Republicans will defend their slim majorities in the House and Senate.

This election cycle is also viewed as a crucial test for Trump’s distinct policies. The recent cash boost from his political fund was reported to enhance the RNC’s initiative to engage Republican voters just ahead of Election Day.

Republican strategists are monitoring less-active Republican voters, using targeted phone banking and advertisements on social media platforms to reach them. Gruters emphasized that it’s essential for Republicans to turn out on Election Day for their candidates to have a fighting chance.

Trump did not actively campaign in New Jersey or Virginia this time, but he did connect with supporters in both states. Recently, he participated in a conference call with Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, aimed at energizing Republican turnout across key state races.

As early voting began in New Jersey last weekend, Trump led a conference call with gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, and he is expected to host another call before the election.

On the other side, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has reportedly spent over $7 million—marking a new record—on voter turnout initiatives across New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, where they aim to retain several state Supreme Court positions.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin recently expressed that he believes in the significance of every election, implying that this one is no different, regardless of the year or level of government involved.

Polling data reveals that former Democratic congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is currently leading Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears in Virginia’s gubernatorial race. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill holds a narrow lead over Ciattarelli for the governorship.

Martin expressed confidence in the Democrats’ chances, stating, “I expect us to win elections in New Jersey and Virginia. We’re pretty optimistic about this opportunity.”
