Diane Lane Reflects on Filming “The Outsiders”

Diane Lane recently shared her experiences of being one of the few girls on the set of the film “The Outsiders” during an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show.” The actress, now 60, discussed what it was like working with a predominantly male cast while filming the 1983 movie.

She described the atmosphere as enjoyable but noted, “In some ways, it was too much testosterone for some girls.” Lane emphasized how she kept to herself in that environment, admitting she felt both excited and a bit overwhelmed.

The movie, adapted from SE Hinton’s novel, follows a group of young gangsters known as the Greasers, who often clash with a rival group of affluent teens called the Socs. Lane played Cherry, a character deeply affected as she grows close to one of the Greasers.

“The Outsiders” featured various actors who would later achieve great fame, such as Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Ralph Macchio.

Lane reflected on the long nights and interesting dynamics of being surrounded by men, saying, “I was able to just sit and watch men working with each other.” She found it fascinating how well they embodied their roles, pondering if their tough lives shaped their performances.

“It was… kind of too much testosterone for one girl,” she recounted, again highlighting her unique position on set. “But I was definitely pinching myself.”

After “The Outsiders,” Lane went on to star in various films, such as the critically acclaimed “Unfaithful.” Interestingly, in a recent interview, Jennifer Lopez stated she had initially been offered Lane’s role, laughing about how that stuck in her mind.

Currently, Lane is promoting her latest film, “Anniversary,” alongside Phoebe Dynevor and Kyle Chandler. This film’s story revolves around a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary with their children each year. However, complications arise when their son introduces a girlfriend connected to a controversial movement.

Lane expressed her thoughts on dialogue and understanding in society, suggesting that “silencing people can radicalize people.” She believes, “It’s more important that we listen to each other,” highlighting the importance of empathy in today’s world.
