Oklahoma kicker faces teasing about his short shorts

Broadcasting Humor on Game Day

During the recent game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Tennessee Volunteers, ESPN broadcasters Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit had a light-hearted moment as they commented on kicker Tate Sandel’s choice of shorts.

Sandel was called into action for a 51-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, and his outfit sparked some playful banter. Fowler noted that shorts are “no longer frowned upon in the sporting world,” to which Herbstreit humorously replied, “That’s for me.”

“That should be a penalty. Just dressing like that should be a penalty,” Herbstreit quipped, adding, “What, are you wearing shorts outside?” This playful critique didn’t overshadow Sandel’s performance, as he successfully kicked a field goal with just over a minute left in the first half, putting Oklahoma ahead 13-10.

Herbstreit joked, “I put Daisy Dukes on and put it in the middle again,” creating a memorable commentary moment.

Regardless of his attire, Sandel had an impressive night, successfully completing all four of his field goal attempts, with his longest being 55 yards. He also made all three extra point attempts.

This season, Sandel has scored a total of 80 points for the Sooners and maintains an impressive accuracy rate of 94.7 percent on field goals, successfully converting every extra point try.

In a closely contested game, Oklahoma triumphed over Tennessee with a score of 33-27. Quarterback John Matthia had a solid outing, completing 18 of 29 passes for 159 yards, along with one interception and a rushing touchdown.

In the meantime, Tennessee’s quarterback Joey Aguilar finished with 393 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. With this victory, Oklahoma improved their season record to 7-2, while Tennessee slipped to 6-3.
