Louvre Robbery Suspects Previously Convicted of Theft Together

Paris Jewelry Heist Investigation Update

PARIS – Prosecutors in Paris revealed Sunday that two individuals involved in the recent Louvre jewelry theft had previously been convicted together a decade earlier. Currently, three suspects are in custody as part of a four-member team.

Laure Becuaux noted that DNA belonging to a 37-year-old man arrested on Saturday was discovered on the basket lift utilized to access the museum’s windows. He’s facing initial charges of organized gang theft and criminal conspiracy.

This man has a criminal history with 11 convictions, 10 of which relate to theft, according to Becuaux.

Another suspect, 39 years old and facing similar preliminary charges, has a total of 15 convictions on his record, including two theft-related offenses.

Becuaux commented, “It’s interesting to note that both were convicted in the same theft case in Paris back in 2015.”

A 34-year-old man, allegedly part of the so-called “Commando” group responsible for the heist, was also charged this week.

Additionally, a 38-year-old woman who has been linked to the 37-year-old suspect was sentenced on preliminary conspiracy charges. Becuaux mentioned that there seems to be a level of intimacy among all the suspects.

All four are currently in custody.

Becuaux refrained from commenting on whether investigators are closing in on the stolen jewels, stating, “We are exploring every avenue for the potential sale of this jewelry on a parallel market. We hope that won’t happen soon. It could be used for money laundering or other trades, and all leads are under scrutiny.”

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed optimism regarding the investigation in a recent interview. He mentioned that while there are four perpetrators, at least one might still be at large, possibly including individuals who orchestrated the crime.

Nuñez stated, “I am hopeful because I have substantial confidence in the police’s efforts. However, I don’t expect the stolen items to be recovered quickly.”
