Colorectal Cancer on the Rise

Colorectal cancer, recognized as the most prevalent type of gastrointestinal cancer, is becoming an increasing concern worldwide. Recently, the rate of early-onset colorectal cancer has surged alarmingly. An analysis from the Centers for Disease Control highlighted a staggering 185% increase in cases among individuals aged 20 to 24, and an even more shocking 333% rise in those aged 15 to 19.

Dr. Karen Zaghiyan, a prominent board-certified colorectal surgeon from Los Angeles, has expressed her concerns regarding the uptick among young adults in a video posted on Instagram. She remarked, “We’re seeing an alarming rise in young-onset colorectal cancer.” In this commentary, she also pointed out some everyday foods and beverages that might contribute to this issue. Red Meat

Red meat has been associated with a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. Dr. Zaghiyan recommends steering clear of red meats, which include beef, veal, lamb, and pork. She explains, “There’s about an 18% increased risk of colorectal cancer in people who regularly consume red meat. We don’t know of a safe amount, and if you’re charring your meat—like cooking it over flames—that adds even more risk.”

Processed Meat

Next on her list is processed meats, which encompass bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and deli meats. According to her, “Eating processed meats can elevate your risk of colorectal cancer by 15 to 35% if consumed daily. The less you have, the better. There’s no established safe quantity.”

Sweetened Beverages

Sugary drinks might be delivering more than just empty calories; they are also detrimental to overall health. Juices from stores, sodas, and various fizzy drinks are flagged for contributing to health issues. “These beverages are packed with high-fructose corn syrup and other sugars, and consuming them is linked to colorectal cancer. A study found that drinking two servings a day doubles your risk compared to those who have them less than once a week,” Dr. Zaghiyan said.

Alcohol

To lower the risk of colorectal cancer, Dr. Zaghiyan suggests limiting alcohol intake, including beer and wine. She notes the dangers can be more significant for daily drinkers, emphasizing, “However, there isn’t a recognized safe amount. Alcohol raises not only the risk of colorectal cancer but also other types of cancer.”

Ultra-Processed Foods

Convenience foods—like chips and instant noodles—might save time but pose health risks. Dr. Zaghiyan advises against ultra-processed options. “These include packaged snacks and baked goods, along with many store-bought breads. All of these foods are linked to a higher risk of gut conditions and colorectal cancer,” she added. The additives commonly found in these items, like emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners, are of particular concern.

The recommendation? Focus on whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, to help reduce risk.
