Drug Cartel Bribery Scheme in Mississippi Delta

In the Mississippi Delta area, over a dozen law enforcement officers face serious charges. They have been indicted by the Justice Department for allegedly taking bribes from individuals connected to a Mexican drug cartel.

U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner announced at a news conference that 20 people have been indicted, among them two elected sheriffs and 14 current or former officers. This investigation spanned several years.

“The law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of title or status. If you betray the trust of the people of Mississippi, you will face consequences,” Joyner emphasized.

He described the situation as a severe breach of public trust. Allegations suggest that officers provided safe passage for suspected drug traffickers in exchange for money, reportedly believing they were involved in transporting 25 kilograms of cocaine. Additional charges include firearms offenses and other specific infractions across the region.

Among those arrested are Washington County Sheriff Milton Gaston and Humphreys County Sheriff Bruce Williams.

FBI Special Agent Robert Eickhoff remarked, “Law enforcement is only effective when officers genuinely serve the community’s interests. This type of corruption strikes at the heart of the community.”

Reportedly, the bribes varied, ranging between $20,000 and $37,000.

Mississippi’s Republican Governor Tate Reeves responded to the allegations, reiterating the commitment to uphold the law impartially: “If you betray the trust of the people of Mississippi, you will face the consequences.”
