Trump hosts a 'Gatsby'-themed party as SNAP benefits come to an end

I hope everyone had a nice Halloween. The president certainly enjoyed his—he threw a Great Gatsby-themed party at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend.

For those who might not recall the symbolism from high school English, “The Great Gatsby” dives into themes of indulgence, fantasy, and the moral decline tied to wealth. F. Scott Fitzgerald depicted the wealthy as “careless people… destroying things and then going back to their own money and letting others clean up the mess they had made.”

This begs the question: was the Gatsby theme a clever metaphor, or was it simply out of touch? While guests were sipping champagne under the chandelier, millions of Americans were losing their SNAP benefits amidst an unprecedented government shutdown.

But this isn’t just a costume bash. The White House is raising funds to build a new ballroom for President Trump—a $300 million endeavor. Wealthy donors are even being given the chance to stay anonymous, even if their businesses were around before his administration.

The situation looks troubling. Major healthcare companies chasing Medicare benefits, powerful Wall Street firms seeking trade advantages, and even the CEO of NVIDIA have all approved contributions. Clearly, the message is that loyalty gets rewarded in private.

Concerns have been voiced by ethics experts about these donations, suggesting they could lead to favoritism for donors or possibly provoke efforts to ban institutions from accepting private funds. Trump claims his banquet hall is “non-political” and insists he plans to use his own funds, but keeping donor identities secret raises more eyebrows.

Meanwhile, a recent Yahoo/YouGov poll indicates that 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s economic handling, with only a third expressing approval. The nation faces challenges, yet the president chooses to celebrate in Gatsby style.

California Governor Gavin Newsom commented on this, pointing out that Trump’s lavish celebration coincided with the loss of SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans, implying a disconnect.

Trump built his reputation on connecting with voters, promising to shake up the political scene. But where does that leave us now? Is he focused on building ballrooms rather than rebuilding relationships?

Because partying in your own opulent environment while people struggle and soliciting favors from the affluent to fund personal projects doesn’t just threaten your credibility. It suggests a profound misunderstanding of the very people you aimed to represent.
