TobyMac Asks for Prayer as Hurricane Melissa Devastates His Wife’s Homeland of Jamaica

TobyMac Calls for Support Following Hurricane Melissa’s Impact on Jamaica

Renowned Christian musician TobyMac is reaching out for prayers and assistance for Jamaica, his wife’s homeland, which has been severely affected by Hurricane Melissa. This Category 5 storm tragically claimed at least 28 lives last week.

Currently, approximately 60% of the island is without electricity due to the hurricane damaging crucial power infrastructure, including power lines and utility poles. This disruption has also hindered the distribution of food and water. Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica’s southwestern coast, packing winds of up to 185 mph.

Category 5 hurricanes represent the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

TobyMac, whose real name is Kevin Michael McKeehan, tied the knot with his wife Amanda in 1994. He frequently expresses his fondness for Jamaica at his concerts.

“Many of you know that part of my heart is in Jamaica. But what you might not know is that Amanda, our kids, and I celebrate Christmas every year in a town called Whitehouse,” TobyMac shared on Instagram recently. “It’s heartbreaking to witness the devastation faced by those who have shown us love for so many years. This is a significant tragedy for numerous families along the South Coast.”

The celebrated artist urged fellow Christians to pray for Jamaica and to consider offering support. He shared a photo depicting a once-thriving coastal area now left in ruins.

“My sister-in-law initiated a GoFundMe page to aid the people of Whitehouse, Jamaica. It’s a community I cherish and a source of inspiration for many of my songs. I trust her to ensure that contributions reach those who desperately need help. If possible, please think about making a small donation… And keep Jamaica in your prayers,” he encouraged.

Reports indicate that some locals are resorting to gathering muddy river water for daily needs, while others depend on coconut water and roasted breadfruit.

TobyMac reflected on his affection for Jamaica during the K-LOVE Fan Awards press conference this year, describing it as a “beautiful” place filled with “incredibly positive individuals.”

“Her family is wonderful,” he commented about his wife. “Her father, who is 85, taught me how to love God. I grew up in a Christian household, and he showed me what it means to have a relationship with the King.”
