Suozzi Advocates for Higher Federal Taxes, Opposes State Increases
During an appearance on Fox News with Bill Hemmer, Congressman Tom Suozzi from New York expressed his opposition to increasing state taxes but showed support for raising federal tax rates.
Zoran Mamdani, who is running for mayor in New York City, promotes progressive ideas like government-run grocery stores, free childcare, and complimentary public transportation. He also supports imposing higher taxes on affluent neighborhoods to fund these initiatives. When Hemmer brought up former President Barack Obama’s lack of endorsement for Mamdani, Suozzi, who said he “fundamentally” disagrees with Mamdani’s vision, began to critique the self-described democratic socialist candidate.
“We have to recognize that Mr. Mamdani, similar to President Trump, is quite charismatic and a skilled campaigner. He knows how to leverage social media and is smart. Both he and Trump tend to capitalize on people’s financial anxieties,” Suozzi remarked. He later announced his backing for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, stating, “The issue lies with his solution. Raising taxes and the minimum wage in New York isn’t prudent since it makes the state less competitive globally.”
Suozzi articulated that while he supports taxing the wealthy and increasing the minimum wage, he believes New York should not be the sole region pushing policies that drive away businesses and residents. He noted, “When I was born, New York had around 40 congressmen; now we have 26, and that number is expected to drop further in the next census. This is because states like Florida and Texas are experiencing growth, while places like New York are not.”
Hemmer raised concerns that New York’s tax hikes might accelerate emigration from the state.
Suozzi responded, “I only back tax increases at the national level, not at the local level, due to the ongoing exodus. I don’t want to be nudged to relocate to places like Florida or Texas simply because their taxes are lower. I’m open to paying more taxes anywhere else in the country.”
Hemmer pointed out, “People often don’t grasp this situation. The trend seems to be heading back to 2020 and avoiding California. New York ranks highest in the country for the number of residents moving out, and we can’t afford to let this continue.”
During his tenure as the administrator of Nassau County, Suozzi was responsible for raising taxes by $200 million, according to Politifact.
In response to Suozzi’s statements, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Maureen O’Toole commented, “Tom Suozzi has finally articulated what many already knew: he wants higher taxes. He’s completely out of touch and may soon find himself unemployed.”
