Teen Vogue Merges with Vogue.com

Condé Nast has announced that Teen Vogue will be merged into Vogue.com, a decision revealed on Monday.

The editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Varsha Sharma, has also resigned amid layoffs; however, it seems that about half of the team will stay on. Internal discussions suggest that six employees from the editorial team, along with at least one audience development staff member, will remain with Condé Nast.

Sharma began her role as EIC in 2021.

Chloe Malle, who took on the editorial leadership of Vogue last September, will now oversee Teen Vogue. There’s a sentiment that while the changes could be problematic, the company has opted to invest in the brand.

The Condé Nast union has expressed strong disapproval of the decision, stating, “Condé’s leadership owes us, and the readers of Teen Vogue, answers.” Their statement emphasized concerns about the layoffs, noting that six union members would be let go, including the political editor—a move perceived to disproportionately affect marginalized groups.

Some staffers have taken to social media to announce their layoffs. Rex McMenamin, the news and politics editor, shared on the Blue Sky platform, “I was fired from Teen Vogue today, along with several other staffers… There will be no political staff at Teen Vogue after today.” Aiyana Ishmael, the style editor, also expressed her disappointment, acknowledging her dismissal along with talented colleagues.

The announcement coincided with the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony. Reports indicate that Sharma had prepared for this event specifically. Condé Nast executives, including Anna Wintour, aim for Teen Vogue to retain a level of independence, despite the merger.

Malle reflected on her fond memories of Teen Vogue, stating, “I remember reading every page… I still love and respect it. I’m committed to supporting that perspective.”

Teen Vogue shifted to digital-only back in 2017 and is now part of the Vogue.com platform. Malle highlighted the importance of consolidating content in today’s fragmented media landscape, which aims to broaden Teen Vogue and Vogue Business’ reach.

Wintour, Condé Nast’s global chief content officer, expressed excitement over Teen Vogue joining the Vogue platform, underscoring its potential to inspire a global youth audience. She praised Sharma’s leadership during transformative times and expressed eagerness for her future endeavors.

Sharma has yet to comment publicly on her departure.
